Royals beat the elements
The traditional final Head Race in the North West rowing calendar is raced on the West Float Dock at Wallasey and organised by Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club.  Always a battle with the elements as well as the course of two sprints up and down the 1200m dock.
Saturday saw the first win by the Royals Junior 13 Coxed quad, they emerged drenched, windswept but unbowed having battled the dreadful conditions on a shortened 600m course. Ewan Bulkeley, Dylan Westoby, Harry Hawksford, Gregory Jones (Stroke)  and Will Napper Cox were elated with the resulted and only slightly more excited than their parents who cheered on all the Royals crews AND loaded the boat trailer.
The Women’s Junior 15 coxed quad of Ellie Webber, Olivia Wellings, Brit Smenck, Laura Forsyth and cox Liam Aierstock also contributed to the medal haul.  The two inexperienced Womens Junior 14 coxed quads in their first race suffered badly in the conditions with wind forcing one crew onto the dock walls and second crew suffering broken oars.
The weather really tested all competitors but the experience of the Masters D eight of Mike Stephens, Simon Dickie, Mike Palamarczuk, Stuart McCormack, Simon Quarmby, Nigel Price, Peter English, Eric Caldwell and cox Liam Aeirstock enabled them to overwhelm their opposition and win their category, coming 12th overall.

Only one crew from Chester made the journey along a fog bound M62 to race, but it was a successful day for the Masters D Coxed Four as they rowed to a class victory in 12 mins 03.2 secs.
Royal’s also had an interest in the fastest crew of the day as student member Marcus Adam was part of the University of Leeds quad that set the fastest time overall at 10 mins 11.3 secs.

More medals from Northwich SB Head

Posted November 16, 2011

Twenty five crews travelled the short distance from the river Dee the river Weaver to race at the Northwich Head of the river on Sunday 13 Nov.  The squad came away with wins across the board and much valuable racing experience with the new younger squads proving they have potential as they develop skill and rowing fitness.

The fastest crew of the day was a Royal Chester and Northwich combined Elite quad scull that covered the course in a fraction over 8.00 minutes, 24 seconds ahead of their competitors Worcester Royal Grammar School, a huge margin over only 2500m.

In Division 1 Junior 14, 16 and 17 single scullers competed strongly with a clear win by Gavin O’Dwyer in Junior 14 with a time of 10.45, an impressive win for this young lad who has great potential. At the opposite end of the age rage Peter Jarvis came away with the Masters F/G single scull medal.

Division 2 saw the long term combination of Paul Johnson (Royal Chester) and Tim Birtwistle (Minerva Bath) take the IM2 double scull medals, and the Junior 16 quad scull exceeded all expectations and winning by a good 5 seconds.
Whilst division 3 saw the storming win by the elite quad.

Yet another winning weekend that showed strength in depth despite Royals squads being restricted due to oversubscribed entries causing a numbers of masters and senior crews to miss out.

Dee Autumn Triumph!

Royal Chester Fastest on the Dee

Royal Chester’s racing success continued to rise with the strong autumn tide that was such a dominant features of this year’s Dee Autumn Head. The resurgence of highly competitive racing crews so early in the season bodes well for the coming winter racing calendar.

Royals swept the board this weekend taking first place in both Divisions 1 and 2, recording the fastest time in both divisions.  The IM1 quad scull won Division 1 with a time of 12mins 42secs while the Senior 8 recorded 11mins 46secs in Division 2.   The club also won another 6 events including the Women’s IM2 8 posting 13mins 21 secs, the fastest time of the day by a women’s crew.

The afternoon tide was both later and higher than expected, delaying the start of Division 2 by one and a half hours. Crews had to row up to the start against a heavy stream, but the stream also resulted in far faster Division 2 race times.

The events won show the depth of rowing ability at Royal Chester, Masters/Veteran men and women demonstrated their skill, against their age and peer groups with wins that showed determination to continue to improve. Medals for Masters C Double scull, Masters D Coxless Four and Masters E Coxed Four added to the tally.

The Women’s Masters D8 had an outstanding row and was way ahead of their opposition Pengwern by the last 200 meters when their steering broke. Cox Jo Hinnigan managed to avoid disaster and rally the girls to a narrow win which they thoroughly deserved after coming to a halt and narrowly missing a collision with the Lady Diana Showboat.

Finally, the junior section added to the medal haul with a win in Women’s Junior 17 double scull.

The success of the more experienced crews was an encouragement to newer ‘Learn to Row’ members who joined in the summer taster sessions, new senior athletes and our juniors developing into Royals of the future.  The Senior Women’s squad now numbers in excess of 24 and regular coaching is providing a road to success in a sport which hooks you into the excitement.

Great days racing at the Long distance sculls

The 2011 Scullers Head saw 300 scullers race from Eccleston to the Groves...TWICE...with only minor incidence, and no complaints...yet anyway.

It takes a lot of people to make it happen and run smoothly, it must be one of the biggest club team build efforts we hold – every 6 months and to put it into perspective Open Events have just provided £3200 for new blades for the Senior women.

Thanks to all those involved, particularly this time to  Tracey and Team McGarva both on and off the water.

Relax now and prepare for Saturday 10th March 2012 – North of England Head

RCRC Golf Day 2011 raises £1200

Posted September 21, 2011

Another brilliant Golf Day for members and guests took place in the Autumn sunshine at Eaton Golf Club on September 20th. CLICK HERE for photos
Nine teams of 4 golfers took part in an exciting competition which was won by the aptly named Temples Bandits, outscoring all the other teams by a substantial margin. They thus took possession of the winners’ trophies and the main prizes on offer, whilst other prizes went to the second placed team and the winners of the longest drive, nearest the pin and the mystery 1838 competition.

There was no Royals member in the winning team, and whilst a number of members participated in the tournament the shot making was sadly not up to the same technical levels as their stroke taking!

The competition was followed in the evening by a prize giving ceremony and a sumptuous dinner laid on by Eaton and enjoyed in total by 72 diners. The generosity of our sponsors furnished a magnificent array of raffle prizes valued in total at £800, with around 20 happy diners going home with a valuable prize.

As well as providing a great days entertainment for golfers and guests the day raised over £1200 for Royals coffers.

Thanks go to John Hinnigan for all his efforts.

Our Emma gets SILVER!

Posted September 5, 2011

Emma Spruce, a Royal Chester Rowing Club member at Uni. has just returned from her first International Regatta with a Silver Medal to show for her efforts.

Currently at Reading University, Emma was selected to row in the six seat in a women’s eight representing Great Britain at the Universities Rowing Championship in Moscow.  The crew won Silver, losing out on Gold to the Germans by 0.05 seconds in a photo finish.

Emma, from Higher Kinnerton only joined Royals in 2009 having previously been a junior swimmer. Her potential both as a sculler and a crew member were soon recognised and developed by club coaches and within a year she was racing at Women’s Henley Regatta in the Royals coxed four which broke the course record three times in an afternoon.

Said Emma, “Royals have ultimately given me the opportunity to take my rowing this far through the support of coaches, athletes and members. I have received a sports scholarship to study at Reading which grants me lots of additional support and the facilities for athletes are great, but I still love to train at Royals when I’m home”.

With more training and hard work Emma hopes to follow in the footsteps of previous Royals members and represent Great Britain in Senior International events in the future.
